She meets her foil in a male writer who is a "kept" man. But, their love and friendship threaten their balanced lives and expose the secret past and vulnerability of Holly.

*DELIVERANCE (1972) -- Jon Voight; Burt Reynolds; Ned Beatty; John Boorman, director; four Atlanta businessmen are tired of their dull, mundane existence and attempt to stir things by going on a river-boating adventure in backwoods Georgia before TVA floods the area. They try to test their mettle against nature but find that they must also face a lawless and dangerous internal society. Their primitive journey leads to death and self discovery.

*THE RAZOR'S EDGE (1984) -- Bill Murray; Theresa Russell; John Byrum, director; the story follows the evolution of Larry, a spoiled upper class boy from the Midwest to an adventure as an ambulance driver in WWI. The experience changes his whole outlook on life, and instead of going home to his fiancee and his normal life after the war, he embarks on a spiritual journey to find himself.

*THELMA & LOUISE (1991) -- Susan Sarandon; Geena Davis; Brad Pitt; Ridley Scott, director; tired of being pushed around by men -- boyfriends, husbands, and other -- two females become not only best buddies but partners in liberation. Wanted in connection for the death of a would-be rapist, the two are chased across country by the police and find freedom, strength, friendship, and control in their adventure.

*AMERICAN BEAUTY (1999) -- Kevin Spacey; Annette Benning; Sam Mendes, director; Lester Burnham, the narrator of the story, is experiencing a midlife crisis. He lives in middle class suburbia, seemingly having a good wife, daughter, job, but something seems to be missing from his life. That "something" is awakened through a young cheerleader. All of the characters in the story, the wife, the daughter, even the neighbor, are leading superficial lives that eventually bloom into bizarre behavior.
