Course Description:

EN 101 emphasizes the process of writing: developing, drafting, critical reading, and revision. Students will write 5 formal essays and a research project, which will introduce students to the use of the library and proper citation of sources. A detailed explanation of each essay will be provided at the time it is assigned. All essays should be typed, double spaced, with standard fonts, margins, and page numbers. Always submit a copy, never the original of all major assignments. Students must provide copies of preliminary drafts of essays for use in group writing workshops, and will write Peer Critiques of each other's essays. Students will also complete shorter writing exercises or quizzes. This is a computer assisted course; on days marked Writing Lab on the syllabus, class will meet in Painter 203. Bring a 3.5 in. floppy disk on these days.

Attendance:

Since discussion of assigned readings and student writing is essential to success in the course, attendance is mandatory and will be recorded at the beginning of each class. If you arrive late to class, please inform the professor after class that you were present, or you will be counted absent. Students are required to attend all scheduled classes to receive a passing grade. Excessive absences, more than 6, will result in a grade of NC in the course.

Grading:

Writing Assignments, Quizzes, and Peer Critiques will be graded on a scale of 1 to 10. Grades on essays will be determined by how well the essay addresses the assigned topic. Grammar and style will also be taken into consideration. Assignments turned in late will be penalized. In extreme circumstances when a request has been made prior to the due date of the assignment, extensions may be granted. Letter grades assigned to essays will have the following numeric values:

A+ = 98B+ = 88C+ = 78D+ = 68F = 0-59
A = 95B = 85C = 75D = 65
A- = 92B- = 82C- = 72D- = 62

Final grades will be based on the same system (except that any grade lower than C will be recorded as NC, no credit) and will be a composite of the following:

Writing Exercises and Quizzes10%
Peer Critiques (and preliminary drafts)20%
Essays (10% each)50%
Research Project20%

A final reminder: plagiarism will result in an F (0) on the assignment, and in severe cases is grounds for failure in the course. Plagiarism includes using paraphrased or quoted information from a source without proper documentation. Using quoted information without putting it in quotes (or indenting for long quotes) is also considered plagiarism, regardless of whether the source is cited. If you are unsure whether you have used material and cited it appropriately, see me before the final draft of the assignment is due.
