Below you will find a listing of the response papers I have assigned for EN 322 Contemporary Poetry. Each paper is due at the beginning of the hour when we discuss the poet or poem in question. If more than one poet can be used for a given assignment, you must turn in your paper on the day we discuss the poet you choose.
  1. Describe the scenes found in a poem by John Ashberry. Simply list the different kinds of scenes and tell who is in them and what is going on. What do these scenes have in common? How do they compare to the scene or subject suggested by the title of the poem? You were assigned either "The Instruction Manual" or "Tennis Court Oath."

  2. Choose 1 long poem or 2-3 shorter poems by either Charles Olson or Robert Creeley. Your paper should be 2 handwritten pages long, so pick appropriate poems. Typed papers will be appreciated. Describe at least three things--images or experiences--that you can visualize or relate to in the poem. Describe them in your own words and tell how they are related to each other or what waht emotional response a reader might have to them. Then write down three questions an intelligent and careful reader might have about the poem after reading it. Choose at least one of those questions and try to find out the answer. Discuss where you looked for the answer and what answers you found.
