CORNELIUS DABNEY (Abt 1640-1689)

Ancestry:  The Dabney family apparently came from Dorset and Somerset counties in England.  Cornelius Dabney was on land in New Kent County (now Hanover County) by 1664.  The Dabneys were probably part of the Cavalier immigration that took place after the execution of Charles I; Daubeneys of England were loyalists.

Descendants:  Dabneys intermarried with the Barrett, Fontaine, and Winston families.  The son of Cornelius, George Dabney (1660-1729) established his home on the Pamunkey River, known as Dabney's Ferry or Greenville, home to Dabneys for four generations.  George lived here and operated the ferry which was on a route to Williamsburg.  Capt. George Dabney was in the first Commission for Peace for the county of King William and was later Sheriff of the county in 1715.  He made his will in 1729.  Cornelius' grandson Charles fought in the Revolutionary War and was an officer with General Washington at Monmouth, Valley Forge, and Yorktown.
